re-imagining everyday objects.
heron p. - January 3rd, 2009
in hawaii i came across these neat bathrooms signs at the honolulu airport. they reminded me of what i did for the bathrooms at the young and banging x nike gallery. i considered the entire building for the show, not just the designated gallery space. for the mens and womens bathroom signs, i had my girl shoot the dude peeing on a TV and fridge, and i shot the girl on her roof. nike did not want to sign off on the big stream of pee in the first take with the girl holding herself up, so i had to take a softer version of her squatting down. both of the guys shots were ok, so we went with him peeing in the fridge. we shot in polaroids just like the yearbook to tie in the entire look / feel of the project. a little hidden secret only seen by those that had to use the bathroom which was tucked away in the back of the gallery, through two hallways.

a different christmas. when winter is really cool.
heron p. - December 30th, 2008
a couple of weeks ago i was on the phone with my parents. they mentioned to me that they were going to maui for xmas and asked if i wanted to join them. up until that point i had no xmas plans so i was like \”uhm, yea. ill go!\” - well we went and it was sick. it really didn\’t feel like a traditional xmas at all. it was sunny and hot, not cold or snowy. so that called for sandals and swim trunks 24/7. no layering of clothes or big jackets with fur lined hoods. no xmas trees and very little xmas lights. a couple days into our xmas get-a-way, i realized that xmas was only a state of mind. you make it what you want it to be and this year it felt great to do something a bit different with the family. the change was perfect. we were only really reminded it was xmas when we tried to go play on this surf flo-rider machine, where you can surf in place with the help of a really powerful jet stream of water. they had closed early because it was xmas eve, so we missed out.
on xmas day, we went on a kayak tour, whale watching and then snorkling with sea turtles. that night on our way back home, i noticed tons of familes out, bar-b-q\’ing along the coast lined beach parks, playing music, haven beers and watching the sunset over the ocean. a different kind of xmas for me. hey, i can dig it!
after learning how to dive, i went down under to catch a flick with this sea turtle. was like swimming in my very own aquarium.

dove down to get a shot of my parents up top and the turtle in my face. came out pretty cool.

matt, our tour guide put this crawling star fish on my hand. he even threw an octopus on all of us, but by then the film had run out.

moms and matt.

my dad, floating gracefully over roughly 200 ft of water. we patiently waited to catch signs of humpbacks coming up for air. they migrate to maui from alaska every winter to have babies in the warm waters, breed and have fun.

finally, after waiting for about 45 mins, all of the sudden about 20 yards out, we spot a mother and baby come up for air! if you look closely, you can see the babies tail just before it dove back under. i felt like an ant and so vulnerable yet so amazed and excited to be out there with them. being in their world, their territory, inches from the surface. the water was so clear, i was hoping to see some swim directly underneath my kayak, but no luck. they kept their distance, and so did we! it was like a natural body high, after the first sighting, i immediately wanted more. as huge as they are, they are some of the most peaceful animals on earth.

these are some photos i found on flickr, to show you what it’s like to kayak with humpback whales from another perspective.
pics courtesy of flickr and wikipedia.

mom and baby guided by some dolphins in the front.

now if you can see how big this whale is next to this boat, imagine how big it is next to a kayak!

observations de argentina - oldie but goody
heron p. - December 29th, 2008
an oldie but goodie i found hidden away in my drafts. this was just a brain dump i had one day while i was in argentina.
-the cars are all pretty old. you’re not gonna see nothin nice or new here.nope, no benz’s, no range rovers, no bmw’s, no bentleys, no audi’s, no aston martins.
-when someone saw my blackberry, she described it to look like a “bed with buttons”, because everyone here just use very “primitive” phones. as basic as you can get.used only for calls and texts.
-i didn’t know empanadas were a national dish. they are sold everywhere. my favorite is carne picante.
-pesos are a third of the dollar, right now. $200 pesos is $60 - it’s cheap here.
-services here operate just like nyc! And in some aspects are just plain better. you can order delivery beer at 4am, and there isn’t a minimum!
-everyone drives pretty crazy. there are lanes marked on the street, but drivers make up their own lanes.
-there are ton’s of taxi’s everywhere.
-the spanish is not identical to european spanish or mexican spanish. and some words are pronounced differently.
-the city is pretty big, and each barrio (neighborhood) has it’s own flavor. some parts you will think you’re in a third world, where other parts you’ll feel like you’re stepping into a house on the champs elysees.
-there are tons and tons of pregnant women
-don’t come here if you’re a vegetarian, because this country is built on beef!
-the girls are FUCKING HOT.

Y&B Art Auction, el interview
heron p. - December 12th, 2008
Supreme is not only a legendary skate lifestyle company from NY, but it’s also a modeling agency from NY.

I put one of their models (Daiane Conterato) in Y&B x New York. When I was down in Buenos Aires, my girl Kathy Lo and fellow Y&B co-curator who runs their blog asked me to cover a piece of art culture from BA.

As I had just learned about Vicky and Alina’s art auction and always paying close attention to everything young and banging around me, I decided to do an interview with the both of them for Supreme. I asked them everything from why they decided to do an auction, to how they put it together to rules to follow if others wanted to host their own. Short and sweet with just 8 questions and some photos. Head over to Supreme Being to check their interview!
“we have a special attraction for all the sense of theatre that is around an auction” - vicky and alina
